India secured a place in the men’s hockey semifinals at the 2026 Asian Games after defeating hosts Japan 2-0 in a competitive Pool A encounter on September 26.
The defending champions maintained their unbeaten run in the tournament, recording their fourth consecutive victory.
Abhishek Breaks the Deadlock
Japan started aggressively and put pressure on India during the opening quarter. The hosts even had a goal ruled out after the officials determined that the ball had touched an Indian foot.
India gradually found their rhythm and took the lead in the 15th minute. Abhishek finished a field move to put India 1-0 ahead.
Harmanpreet Doubles India’s Advantage
India extended their lead in the 40th minute through captain Harmanpreet Singh.
After India earned a penalty corner, Harmanpreet produced a powerful low flick that beat the Japanese goalkeeper. The goal gave India a valuable two-goal cushion.
Japan Keep India Under Pressure
Japan continued to challenge India throughout the contest, particularly during the early stages. The hosts enjoyed significant possession in the opening quarter and created several opportunities from penalty corners.
India’s defence, however, remained organised and prevented Japan from converting its chances.
Penalty-Corner Conversion Remains an Area to Improve
India earned 10 penalty corners during the match but converted only one of them.
While the result secured India’s semifinal place, improving efficiency from set pieces could become important when the team enters the knockout stage.
India Maintain Perfect Pool Record
The victory extended India’s winning streak to four matches. Before facing Japan, the team had recorded wins over Indonesia, Sri Lanka and South Korea, including high-scoring victories in the first two matches.
India will play Bangladesh on September 28 in their final Pool A match before the knockout phase.

The 2-0 victory confirms India’s place in the last four of the men’s hockey competition. The defending champions will now turn their attention to the final pool match and preparations for the semifinal.
