Teachers in Karnataka can now use the prefix “Tr” before their names following a Teachers’ Day announcement by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. The proposed title is intended as a formal public mark of respect for the teaching profession.
The prefix stands for Teacher and places educators alongside professions that commonly use identifiers such as Dr and Er. It does not represent a new qualification or change teachers’ academic status; instead, it is a symbolic form of professional recognition.
The September 5 announcement linked the initiative with Teachers’ Day, which commemorates former President and educationist Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Its longer-term impact will depend on whether teachers, institutions and the public choose to adopt the title widely.
