National Engineers’ Day 2026: India Celebrates Legacy of Sir M. Visvesvaraya.

New Delhi, September 15, 2026: India is celebrating National Engineers’ Day today to mark the 165th birth anniversary of the legendary engineer, statesman and Bharat Ratna recipient Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. Observed every year on September 15, the day honours his extraordinary contributions to engineering, infrastructure and nation-building.

Who Was Sir M. Visvesvaraya?

Born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli (present-day Karnataka), Visvesvaraya is widely regarded as one of India’s greatest engineers and the “Father of Modern Mysore.”

He studied civil engineering at the College of Engineering in Pune and went on to design several landmark projects. As Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918, he played a pivotal role in the state’s industrial and infrastructural development.

His most notable achievements include:

Design and construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam

Flood control systems for Hyderabad, including Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs

Protection works for Visakhapatnam port

Promotion of technical education and industrialisation

In recognition of his lifelong service, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1955. He lived a disciplined and purposeful life until the age of 100, passing away in 1962.

Why September 15?

The Government of India officially designated September 15 as National Engineers’ Day in 1968 to commemorate Visvesvaraya’s birth anniversary and to recognise the contribution of engineers to the country’s progress.

Theme for 2026

This year’s theme centres on “Smart engineering for a sustainable future through innovation and digitalisation,” reflecting the evolving role of engineers in addressing climate challenges, digital transformation and sustainable development.

Celebrations Across the Country

Engineering colleges, professional bodies such as the Institution of Engineers (India), IITs, NITs and industries are organising seminars, technical competitions, project exhibitions, lectures and tributes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to Sir M. Visvesvaraya and described engineers as “Karmayogis” who build and innovate for a better tomorrow.

Enduring Relevance

Visvesvaraya’s emphasis on planning, discipline, innovation and practical problem-solving continues to inspire generations of engineers. At a time when India is focusing on infrastructure growth, renewable energy, semiconductors, AI and the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the principles he stood for remain highly relevant.

On National Engineers’ Day, the nation salutes the countless engineers who design, build and maintain the systems that power modern India — and remembers the visionary who set the highest standards of excellence in the profession.
