Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has welcomed the understanding reached between protesting students in Jharkhand and the State government, following weeks of agitation over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations.
Gandhi praised the students for maintaining restraint and appreciated the Hemant Soren-led government for choosing dialogue to address their concerns. He said the resolution showed that disagreements involving students and authorities can be addressed through discussion rather than prolonged confrontation.
Hunger Strike Comes to an End
The development came after student protesters ended their hunger strike following talks with the Jharkhand government. The agitation had focused largely on alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations and demands for a more transparent government-job selection process.
The State government subsequently announced the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination along with examinations conducted through the outsourced agency TDPL since 2014. The government has also indicated steps toward recruitment-related reforms.
Gandhi Praises Dialogue
Gandhi said the outcome was encouraging because both sides chose negotiation to address the dispute. He also emphasised that students who raise questions about matters affecting their careers should receive clear answers.
The Congress leader had earlier urged Chief Minister Hemant Soren to directly engage with the protesting students, describing their agitation as peaceful and their concerns as legitimate.
Focus Shifts to Recruitment Reforms
Although the end of the hunger strike marks an important development, the wider issue of recruitment transparency remains under discussion.
Protest leaders have continued to demand accountability and stronger safeguards for government examinations. Devendra Mahto, who ended his 16-day hunger strike after the government’s announcement, has also said that the broader movement will continue in a second phase focused on corruption-free recruitment through the state’s major recruitment bodies.
A Larger Issue for Job Aspirants
The Jharkhand episode has once again brought attention to concerns among young people preparing for government examinations. For aspirants, transparency in question-paper preparation, examination conduct, evaluation and recruitment remains central to confidence in the selection system.
With the government now responding to some of the protesters’ demands and discussions continuing over further reforms, the focus is expected to shift toward how these measures are implemented.
