Gujarat Congress Seeks Impartial Probe, Alleges Political Bias in Police Action

Party leaders submit a memorandum to DGP Vikas Sahay, raising concerns over alleged false cases and obstacles faced by opposition candidates.

GANDHINAGAR  The Gujarat Congress staged a protest on October 26 and submitted a memorandum to state Director General of Police Vikas Sahay, calling for an impartial examination of complaints involving alleged politically motivated cases and unequal treatment of opposition workers.

The demonstration was led by Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda and Congress Legislature Party leader Tushar Chaudhary, along with other party representatives and workers. Chavda alleged that law-enforcement agencies were being influenced by political pressure and that people criticising the government risked being labelled anti-national or facing legal action.

Chavda also called for scrutiny of allegations concerning disproportionate assets involving police officers. The party asked whether the police administration was acting independently or in a manner favourable to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). These are allegations made by Congress leaders and have not been established as findings in the material provided.

Tushar Chaudhary raised concerns about local body elections, alleging that some Congress candidates faced difficulties during nomination and campaigning. He claimed that certain candidates were pressured to withdraw. Congress said candidates must be able to contest elections without intimidation or improper interference; the specific claims require independent verification.

The delegation delivered its memorandum at Police Bhavan and asked the DGP to examine the complaints and take appropriate action if wrongdoing is established. The party’s request places the conduct of the state police under renewed public scrutiny and calls for a clear response from the authorities.

The protest reflects a wider political debate in Gujarat about the relationship between government, police and opposition parties. A transparent review of the complaints could help establish what occurred and whether any action is warranted. The response of the police leadership, along with any subsequent inquiry, will be important in assessing the claims.
