Indian football is preparing for a significant reset when the 2026-27 Indian Super League season begins on October 10. The campaign is scheduled to run until May 2027 and will restore a traditional home-and-away format, giving the competition a longer rhythm than the shortened previous season.
Thirteen teams are expected to play 163 matches. The double round-robin structure will make sustained form important, while supporters will have more opportunities to watch their clubs at home. The league stage and playoffs will continue to offer separate objectives: the team finishing first will receive the ISL Shield and league champion status, while the top six will compete for the ISL Cup.
A key change is happening away from the field. Participating clubs are set to take a greater role in commercial rights and decisions about the league’s direction under a club-led model. The hope is that more club involvement will support investment, stability and a stronger long-term football ecosystem.
There are also questions around the lineup. Churchill Brothers are expected to enter through the Jamshedpur FC licence, subject to regulatory approval. Promoted Diamond Harbour FC will not take up its ISL place after failing to meet administrative requirements.
The October start will shift attention to squad building, coaching plans and the early race for points. A longer calendar and greater club responsibility make this season about more than silverware; it is a test of whether Indian football can build a more durable competition.
