Himachal Congress Compares Vote Protest to Quit India Movement, Demands CEC’s Removal

The Himachal Pradesh Congress has intensified its campaign against alleged electoral irregularities, with party state in-charge Rajni Patil comparing the agitation to the Quit India Movement of 1942.

Speaking to reporters in Una on October 25, Patil said the protests would continue until Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar was removed from office. The party has accused the Election Commission of failing to ensure fairness in the electoral process, allegations that remain contested.

Congress Raises Concerns Over Voter Lists

Patil linked the party’s concerns to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and allegations of voter deletions. She also referred to claims concerning Chandigarh’s voter lists and said Congress would pursue legal remedies.

The BJP and the Election Commission have faced broader opposition criticism over the issue, while the allegations of deliberate electoral manipulation have not been independently established.

November 1 Rally Planned in Delhi

Congress leaders have announced plans for a larger demonstration at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1. The party has claimed that around 10 lakh people could attend, while approximately 10,000 to 15,000 Congress and CPM workers from Himachal Pradesh are expected to participate. These figures are estimates announced by the parties.

Himachal Leaders Step Up Criticism

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri also accused the BJP of attempting to destabilise the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh. Congress leaders said their campaign would continue around voter rights and accountability, keeping the Election Commission at the centre of the political dispute.
