The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced nationwide protests against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over a controversial remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late father. The dispute has triggered sharp exchanges between the two parties, with Congress defending Kharge’s comments.
What Did Kharge Say?
The controversy erupted during Kharge’s address in Patna, Bihar, at an event marking the birth anniversary of the state’s first Chief Minister, Shri Krishna Singh. While discussing alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, an audience member interrupted with a remark about Modi not leaving office.
Kharge responded with the phrase “Modi ka baap bhi jayega,” prompting criticism from BJP leaders.
BJP Demands an Apology
The BJP described Kharge’s remark as offensive and announced demonstrations at state and district headquarters. Senior party leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, criticised the Congress president and called for greater restraint in political discourse.
Congress Defends Its President
Congress leaders argued that Kharge’s response came after an interruption during his speech. Party spokesperson Pawan Khera said the remark referred to the Prime Minister’s ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), rather than being intended as an insult to his late father.
Political Row Intensifies
The exchange has added to the ongoing confrontation between the BJP and Congress over political rhetoric and the SIR process. With the BJP planning protests and Congress standing by its president, the controversy has become another flashpoint in the parties’ national political contest.
