The Delhi government has announced plans to create hostel facilities for around 10,000 college and university students across the national capital. The decision, announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on September 15, 2026, comes in the wake of the Satya Niketan PG building collapse that claimed seven lives and highlighted serious gaps in student accommodation and safety.
Key Highlights of the Announcement
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the government aims to provide safe, secure, convenient and affordable accommodation for both male and female students studying in any college or university in Delhi.
Lakhs of students come to Delhi for higher education. They get admission but struggle to find proper hostels. We have decided to construct hostels for 10,000 students where their safety, security and economical accommodation will be taken care of,” she said in a video message.
The Chief Minister emphasised that students should not have to worry about housing, food or living conditions so they can fully focus on their studies and future goals. Parents from across the country should also feel confident sending their children to Delhi.
