Mohammed Shami Refuses to Give Up Hope of Returning to Team India

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has not abandoned his hopes of making an international comeback after being left out of India’s squad for the upcoming multi-format tour of New Zealand. The experienced pacer says he remains motivated and focused on performing in domestic cricket.

The 36-year-old last represented India during the Champions Trophy campaign in March 2025. He has taken 462 international wickets in 197 matches across all three formats.

Shami Remains Determined

Speaking to reporters, Shami said players should always have goals and should never lose hope of achieving them. He stressed that his immediate focus remains on playing for Bengal and helping his state win the Ranji Trophy.

Despite missing out on national selection again, the fast bowler has made it clear that he still wants to return to international cricket.

Injury Concerns and Selection Questions

Shami’s career has been affected by recurring leg problems, which have interrupted his progress. His omission from India’s upcoming tour has renewed questions about his international future.

He was also left out of Bengal’s Ranji Trophy match against Services last week. Shami said the decision was related to the pitch conditions, which favoured spin bowling, rather than concerns about his fitness. He maintained that he was training regularly and felt in good shape.

A Key Figure in India’s Past Success

Shami was India’s leading wicket-taker during the 2023 ODI World Cup, when the team reached the final. He was also among India’s leading wicket-takers during their successful Champions Trophy campaign in 2025.

With India preparing for a busy international schedule, Shami will look to use domestic cricket to maintain his rhythm and strengthen his case for selection. Whether he earns another opportunity will depend on his performances and the selectors’ plans.

For now, the veteran pacer says his focus is on continuing to play and working towards his goals.
