How AI Could Change the Way Difficult Scientific Problems Are Solved

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used not only to analyse information, but also to explore difficult scientific questions. The examples in recent research show how AI can work alongside scientists in mathematics, plasma physics and other complex fields.

Searching Through Difficult Mathematics

The Navier–Stokes case shows one possible role for AI: exploring a problem that has challenged mathematicians for generations. OpenAI says thousands of AI agents worked simultaneously on the problem and produced a proposed solution that is now being examined by mathematicians.

The important point is that AI-generated work still needs expert scrutiny. A computer-assisted proof can be formally checked in parts, but researchers must determine whether the complete argument is correct and meaningful.

Making Faster Decisions in Fusion

In nuclear fusion research, AI has a different job. The PACMAN framework developed by researchers at Princeton and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory can analyse and control plasma in milliseconds.

It has also been tested for predicting a tearing-mode instability before it develops. This illustrates how AI can be useful when a physical system changes too quickly for a human operator to respond directly.

Humans Remain Central

These examples do not mean scientists are being removed from the process. In the fusion experiments, researchers set objectives and maintain safety limits. In mathematics, independent experts still need to examine the proposed proof.

The Bigger Shift

The emerging role of AI in science is therefore less about replacing researchers and more about expanding what they can explore. AI can search through possibilities, analyse complex systems and help test ideas quickly.

As these systems improve, scientists may increasingly use them as research partners. But reliable results will still depend on careful validation, transparency and human scientific judgement.
