India continued its strong medal run at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, with shooting and boxing providing major highlights on September 29. The Indian contingent reached 48 medals, comprising five gold, 21 silver and 22 bronze medals.
The latest haul included a historic shooting gold for Neeru Dhanda, a silver for India’s women’s trap team and a bronze for boxer Narender Berwal.
Neeru Dhanda Creates History
Neeru Dhanda produced one of the biggest moments of the day by winning gold in the women’s individual trap event.
She scored 28 hits in the final, becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games gold medal in trap shooting. Her performance also surpassed the previous Asian Games record of 24 hits.
Dhanda had already helped India secure silver in the women’s trap team event alongside Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer. The Indian trio finished with 328 points, behind China’s 346.
Boxing Adds Another Medal
India also added a bronze through heavyweight boxer Narender Berwal in the men’s +90kg category.
Narender reached the semifinals before losing to Kazakhstan’s Aibek Oralbay on a 0-5 judges’ decision. His run nevertheless assured India of another medal.
Other Indian boxers were also competing for places in the finals, with Parveen and Ankush Panghal among those in semifinal action on the day.
Athletics Remains an Important Medal Source
India’s athletics campaign has already contributed several medals during the Games, with athletes such as Gulveer Singh, Murali Sreeshankar and Yashvir Singh featuring among the country’s silver-medal winners.
The September 29 schedule also featured events involving Gulveer Singh, Avinash Sable, Mohammed Afsal and several Indian relay teams.
Hockey and Other Sports in Focus
India’s men’s hockey team also remains in contention after progressing to the semifinals. The team defeated Bangladesh 10-0 in its final pool match and was set to face Pakistan in the semifinal.
Indian teams have also advanced in squash, while athletes and players continue to compete across archery, cycling, sailing, kurash, surfing and other disciplines.
