Rahul Gandhi Warns of Possible Legal Action as INDIA Bloc Puts Electoral Dispute at Centre of Delhi Rally

Opposition leaders used the Ramlila Maidan gathering to press for accountability over the SIR exercise and present a united position.

INDIA Bloc Presents a Joint Front

Leaders of the INDIA bloc assembled at Ramlila Maidan on November 1, turning the Delhi rally into a joint platform for their objections to electoral-roll revision. The demonstration focused on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and demands for accountability from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The participation of national and regional opposition representatives was intended to show coordination among parties that have different political bases but share concerns about the voter-list process.

Rahul Gandhi’s Warning

Addressing the gathering, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that removing Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar would be an initial step towards addressing the opposition’s concerns. He also warned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah could face legal proceedings in the future.

Gandhi presented the campaign as one that would pursue accountability through democratic and legal means. He also said the alliance did not support violence or hatred against political opponents.

SIR Remains the Main Point of Disagreement

Opposition parties allege that the revision has led to the removal of a large number of names and could affect eligible voters. Figures cited in the source report put the number of removed entries at around 130 million, including entries classified as absent, shifted or deceased.

The Election Commission maintains that electoral rolls need to be updated to remove duplicate and ineligible entries. The central dispute is whether the process is being carried out transparently and whether legitimate voters are adequately protected.

Regional Parties Share the Platform

The rally brought together leaders from parties with different regional constituencies. Their participation gave the alliance an opportunity to present electoral transparency as a shared concern and to call for scrutiny of the Election Commission’s procedures.

BJP Rejects Opposition’s Allegations

The BJP responded with parallel political programmes and accused the opposition of undermining democratic institutions. It rejected allegations of electoral manipulation and questioned the INDIA bloc’s motives.

The rival positions illustrate the political divide over the SIR exercise: opposition parties are demanding stronger safeguards and accountability, while the BJP defends the revision process.

Campaign to Continue

The Ramlila Maidan meeting was another stage in the INDIA bloc’s campaign. Opposition leaders indicated that they would continue taking their concerns to constitutional authorities and raising the issue in different states.

The dispute remains unresolved, with electoral transparency, voter participation and the role of the Election Commission continuing to feature prominently in national politics.
