India’s film business is moving beyond the simple question of whether streaming will replace cinemas. Viewers increasingly decide which films deserve a theatre visit and which can wait for an OTT release, while producers and exhibitors debate the right gap between the two.
The discussion has intensified around a proposed eight-week theatrical window in South India. A longer window can give cinemas more time to earn, while a shorter one gives viewers faster home access. The difficult task is protecting the theatrical experience without treating streaming as an afterthought.
The likely future is selective rather than either-or. Large action films and franchise events may remain theatre-first, while smaller dramas can benefit from streaming reach. The big screen is changing, not disappearing, as audiences use both formats for different kinds of stories.
