Delhi Metro Shuts 11 Stations Ahead of Jantar Mantar Protest Amid Tight Security

Delhi Metro stations closed amid tight security ahead of Jantar Mantar protest

Security arrangements were intensified across central Delhi ahead of a proposed protest at Jantar Mantar, prompting the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to temporarily close entry and exit facilities at 11 stations. The restrictions were introduced amid concerns over a large gathering and heightened security requirements around the New Delhi area.

The affected stations included Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk, Seva Teerth, Mandi House, Lok Kalyan Marg, INA, Chawri Bazaar, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg and New Delhi.

DMRC said interchange facilities remained available at several stations, including Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, INA, New Delhi and Central Secretariat, allowing passengers to change metro lines even though entry and exit were restricted.

The security measures came ahead of a planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demands directed at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Delhi Police had denied permission for the proposed demonstration and deployed additional security personnel in sensitive parts of central Delhi.

Authorities also introduced restrictions around the protest zone, with commuters being advised to plan their journeys carefully and avoid affected areas wherever possible. Traffic restrictions and diversions were also announced around key roads in central Delhi as security agencies prepared for possible crowds.

The metro restrictions caused inconvenience for commuters travelling through central Delhi, particularly those heading toward government offices, commercial areas and major transport hubs. Passengers were advised to check the latest DMRC updates before beginning their journey because the restrictions were initially announced to remain in force until further notice.

The developments highlight the extensive security preparations undertaken by authorities when large political or civic demonstrations are expected in central Delhi.

Police and security agencies continued to monitor the situation around Jantar Mantar while authorities assessed the need for further restrictions based on developments on the ground.

With protests eventually taking place despite the restrictions, reports said hundreds of people were detained by Delhi Police during demonstrations linked to the issue.

The situation remained closely watched as security measures continued across central Delhi.
