Delhi Police have arrested social media influencer and activist Swatantra Bhardwaj in connection with an alleged assault during a July protest at Jantar Mantar. Bhardwaj was detained in Bulandshahr and later sent to one-day police custody as investigators examined the incident.
The case concerns an alleged attack on Sanjay Kumar, father of student activist Nishu Azad, during a Cockroach Janata Party protest. Bhardwaj has said he acted in self-defence, while other accounts dispute that version. Investigators will need to assess statements, video material and other evidence.
The case gained further political attention after supporters demanded police action and reports said additional legal provisions were added. The arrest is an important procedural step, not a finding of guilt, and the competing claims will now be tested through the investigation and legal process.
