Congress leaders from Manipur held discussions with party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on November 2, focusing on the state’s security situation and preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections.
The meeting brought together the party’s national and state leadership to discuss continuing concerns over law and order, the impact of ethnic unrest and the organisational work required before the next election.
State Leaders Highlight Continuing Security Concerns
During the meeting, Manipur Congress representatives briefed the national leadership about the situation in the state. They raised concerns over continuing insecurity and the challenges involved in restoring normal life.
Congress Legislature Party leader Keisham Meghachandra said the discussions covered the prevailing law and order situation and the difficulties faced by people affected by the unrest.
The leaders stressed the need for peace, security and stable governance in Manipur.
Kharge and Rahul Gandhi Meet State Delegation
The meeting was attended by Manipur Congress president O. Ibobi Singh, CLP leader Keisham Meghachandra and AICC in-charge Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, among other representatives.
The delegation discussed developments in the state and the concerns of local party workers. The discussions also gave the national leadership an opportunity to review the political and organisational challenges facing the Manipur unit.
Congress Looks Towards the 2027 Assembly Election
Along with the security situation, the meeting examined the party’s preparations for the 2027 Manipur Assembly elections.
The leaders discussed organisational readiness, coordination within the state unit and the need to strengthen the party’s presence ahead of the electoral contest.
The meeting indicates that Congress is seeking to address immediate concerns in Manipur while planning its longer-term political strategy.
Ethnic Unrest Remains a Major Concern
Manipur has experienced prolonged ethnic violence since May 2023, when clashes began between the valley-based Meitei community and the hill-based Kuki community.
The unrest has caused deaths, displacement and continuing concerns about public safety. Tensions involving Kuki and Naga communities have also added to security challenges in some areas.
The situation has kept questions about reconciliation, security and the restoration of normalcy central to political discussions in the state.
Manipur Leaders Participate in INDIA Bloc Rally
Congress representatives from Manipur also took part in the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on November 1.
According to a party functionary, some participants raised slogans calling to save Manipur. The rally was primarily organised around opposition concerns about alleged electoral irregularities and voter-list revision.
The participation of Manipur leaders provided an opportunity to highlight the state’s situation during a wider national political demonstration.
Peace and Election Preparedness on Congress Agenda
The November 2 meeting reflected the two major areas of focus for the Manipur Congress unit: addressing the state’s continuing security challenges and preparing for the 2027 Assembly elections.
The national leadership has heard the concerns raised by state representatives, while discussions on organisational preparedness have also begun. How these deliberations translate into action will remain an important aspect of the party’s work in Manipur over the coming months.
