Tamil Nadu has extended for three more years an exemption that allows eligible shops and commercial establishments to stay open throughout the year. The latest notification took effect on August 24, 2026, and continues a framework the state has renewed periodically.
The extension gives retailers, restaurants and service businesses flexibility to operate on weekends and holidays, but it does not remove worker safeguards. Employers must provide employees at least one weekly day of rest on a rotational basis and comply with applicable records and employment conditions.
The policy supports continuity in the state’s retail and service economy while placing responsibility on employers to follow the conditions attached to the exemption. Its practical success will depend on both business use of the flexibility and compliance with labour protections.
