Meet Maya
A humanoid robot named Maya attracted online attention after performing an Indian classical dance to the popular Marathi song ‘Wajle Ki Bara.’ The performance brought robotics and traditional Indian art together in an unusual way.
A Robot With a Traditional Look
Maya was developed by Tuesday Labs and students from Masters’ Union using the Unitree G1 humanoid robot platform. The project combines robotics, artificial intelligence and creative performance.
How the Choreography Was Built
For the presentation, the robot was dressed in ethnic clothing and jewellery and given a wig, creating a visual connection with the cultural setting.
Robotics Meets Indian Dance
The choreography was built from motion-capture recordings of a real dancer. Those movements were then programmed and refined with reinforcement learning to help the robot maintain balance and reproduce the sequence.

The project highlights a contrast between traditional dance, which depends heavily on human expression and physical control, and a humanoid machine reproducing recorded choreography.
