Meira Kumar is set to preside over the programme, with Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi assigned key roles
Opposition prepares public protest
The INDIA bloc is preparing a public, impeachment-style programme against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi on October 30. The event is intended as a political demonstration over the opposition’s concerns about electoral roll revisions and allegations of vote theft.
Meira Kumar to chair the programme
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is expected to preside over the proceedings. The programme is scheduled to take place at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence at 10 Rajaji Marg from 3:30 pm. Opposition leaders had considered a mock Parliament format before settling on the public impeachment-style event.
Kharge and Rahul Gandhi given key roles
Kharge is expected to introduce the motion, while Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is set to deliver the concluding remarks. Representatives of other INDIA bloc parties are also expected to present their views during the programme.
SIR and voter-list concerns at the centre
The opposition’s objections focus on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Congress and its allies have questioned the deletion of voters’ names and called for greater transparency in the revision process. Their allegations remain disputed and form part of the wider political disagreement over the Election Commission’s work.
Opposition parties coordinate preparations
A meeting at Kharge’s residence on October 29 brought together Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and K C Venugopal, along with Meira Kumar. Representatives of the Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and CPI(M) also took part in discussions.
November 1 rally planned as next step
The symbolic programme is part of a broader opposition campaign that includes a rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1. INDIA bloc parties are coordinating with their state units to mobilise supporters and highlight their demand for transparency in electoral processes. The public event is not a formal constitutional impeachment procedure.
