S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘Varanasi’: A Time-Travel Epic Spanning 7000 BC to 2027

S.S. Rajamouli’s much-awaited Varanasi is generating fresh excitement after Priyanka Chopra revealed more details about the film’s unusual narrative. The Mahesh Babu-starrer is described as a large-scale adventure that travels across different periods, beginning around 7000 BC and extending to 2027.

The film brings together Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran, with Rajamouli directing the project. Recent reports indicate that production is also approaching its final stage, with more than 90% of filming reportedly completed.

According to Priyanka Chopra’s recent comments, Varanasi does not simply rely on the familiar idea of characters entering a time machine and travelling from one year to another. Instead, the story reportedly uses its characters and narrative to connect different eras. This approach gives the movie a combination of action, adventure, mythology, fantasy and science-fiction elements, creating a storyline that moves between ancient and contemporary settings.

Mahesh Babu plays the central character Rudhra, while Priyanka Chopra appears as Mandakini. Prithviraj Sukumaran is also part of the principal cast. The project marks Rajamouli’s first collaboration with Mahesh Babu and Chopra’s return to Indian cinema in a major Telugu production.

The movie is also expected to incorporate elements connected with Indian mythology. Reports have linked portions of the story to the Ramayana, although the exact narrative structure and how these elements connect to the larger time-spanning plot remain key points of interest.

The reported journey from 7000 BC to 2027 gives Varanasi an unusually broad timeline. Rajamouli has also described the project as a globetrotting adventure, with the story involving locations and settings across different parts of the world.

The film’s promotional material has already generated curiosity about its scale and visual design. An alleged leaked set image recently circulated online showing what appeared to be a dinosaur and large temple structures, although the image has not been officially confirmed as authentic.

Varanasi is currently scheduled for a 7 April 2027 theatrical release, according to available film information. The movie is being positioned as a major international-scale production and is expected to release in multiple languages.

With Rajamouli behind the camera and Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran leading the cast, the film is attracting attention well ahead of its theatrical release.
