US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited Srinagar on Wednesday and met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, marking his first visit to the Union Territory since taking charge as Washington’s envoy.
During the visit, Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India and indicated that the United States would reassess its existing travel advisory for the region.
Washington May Reconsider Travel Warning
Speaking after his meeting with Omar Abdullah, Gor said the United States periodically reviews its travel advisories and would examine whether the current warning for Jammu and Kashmir should be eased.
He said the region’s improved security situation and its tourism potential were factors worth considering. Gor also noted that Kashmir’s natural beauty and opportunities could attract more American visitors if travel guidance becomes less restrictive.
The US currently maintains a high-level travel warning for Jammu and Kashmir, citing security concerns including terrorism and unrest. Eastern Ladakh and Leh are treated separately under the advisory.
Meeting With Omar Abdullah
Gor’s meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah focused on relations between India and the United States and possible areas of cooperation involving Jammu and Kashmir.
Abdullah described the discussion as positive and said the two sides exchanged views on matters concerning the Union Territory. He has also made clear that issues relating to Jammu and Kashmir should be addressed through India’s own institutions rather than seeking solutions from foreign governments.
Tourism Could Benefit From Advisory Change
The possibility of a softer US travel warning could be significant for Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector, which depends heavily on visitors and has repeatedly been affected by security-related perceptions.
Earlier on Wednesday, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had urged the US envoy to reconsider the highest-level travel warning, arguing that the advisory affects tourism and the families whose livelihoods depend on it.
First Major J&K Visit as US Envoy
Gor’s Srinagar visit comes as India and the US continue to strengthen engagement on security, economic cooperation and other strategic issues.
His comments on the travel advisory do not amount to an immediate change in US policy. Instead, they indicate that Washington will review the existing guidance before deciding whether any change is warranted.
The visit and the envoy’s remarks are likely to attract attention in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly among tourism and business sectors looking for greater international confidence in the region.
