Congress Links Parliamentary SIR Discussion to Demands for Election Commission Accountability

The disagreement between the Congress and the BJP over electoral-roll revision has taken another turn after Union Home Minister Amit Shah invited Rahul Gandhi to debate the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in a special parliamentary session.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh responded by questioning the government’s earlier position on parliamentary discussions. He said the Opposition’s concerns needed to be addressed before the proposed debate could move forward.

Jairam Ramesh Questions the Government’s Position

Ramesh recalled that during the previous Monsoon Session, the government had maintained that SIR fell within the Election Commission’s authority. He questioned why the Home Minister was now offering a parliamentary discussion on the same subject.

The Congress leader argued that the government’s position had changed and asked it to clarify its approach towards the Opposition’s demands.

Congress Calls for Suspension of SIR

The party has demanded that the ongoing SIR exercise be suspended, citing concerns about its potential impact on eligible voters.

Congress leaders have questioned the transparency and implementation of the voter-list revision process. They have also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the Election Commission’s handling of the matter requires greater accountability.

These are the Congress party’s political demands and allegations; they have not been established as findings of wrongdoing.

Delimitation Bills Add to the Disagreement

Apart from SIR, Ramesh raised concerns about the government’s proposed delimitation Bills. He said opposition parties needed access to the details of the proposals before taking part in discussions.

He also called for an all-party meeting to examine the possible implications of the proposed changes and ensure that political parties could present their views.

Amit Shah Offers a Special Parliamentary Discussion

Shah’s invitation to Rahul Gandhi included discussions on SIR, Electronic Voting Machines and allegations of electoral irregularities.

Speaking during a BJP march in Hyderabad, the Home Minister said the government was prepared to convene a special session of Parliament. He also criticised the INDIA bloc’s recent Delhi rally and questioned its allegations about the electoral process.

Shah referred to Congress victories in several states while challenging the party’s criticism of EVMs.

Political Dispute Continues

The exchange has highlighted the differences between the government and the Opposition over electoral administration and parliamentary accountability.

The BJP has defended SIR and called for a debate, while Congress has insisted that its demands concerning the Election Commission and voter-list revision be addressed.

The possibility of a special parliamentary session remains uncertain, but the disagreement over SIR and delimitation continues to be an important issue in national politics.
