Saudi Arabia Says 2027 Asian Cup Preparations Remain on Schedule Despite Security Concerns

Saudi Arabia’s organisers have confirmed that preparations for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup are continuing as planned, despite growing security concerns following recent attacks in the kingdom. The 24-team football tournament is scheduled to take place from January 7 to February 5, 2027, across Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar.

The announcement comes as several international sporting events in Saudi Arabia have faced postponements or schedule changes, raising questions about the country’s ability to host upcoming competitions safely.

Organisers Continue Preparations

The local organising committee said work on venues, facilities, operational arrangements and supporting services was progressing according to the approved schedule. It added that preparations were continuing in coordination with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and other relevant stakeholders.

Organisers also said they would continue monitoring developments and work to ensure appropriate conditions for the tournament.

AFC Keeps Postponement Option Open

AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa has acknowledged that the competition could be postponed until 2028 if circumstances require it. He indicated that the governing body was monitoring the situation and could wait until the end of November before making a decision.

For now, no official change has been announced to the tournament dates. The Asian Cup will also be an important test of Saudi Arabia’s ability to stage a major international football event ahead of its planned hosting of the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

Recent Attacks Disrupt Saudi Sporting Events

Security concerns have already affected several competitions in the kingdom. The Saudi International golf tournament has been postponed indefinitely, while the Six Kings Slam tennis event has been rescheduled from October to December. FIFA and the Saudi Esports Federation have also postponed the FIFAe Finals 2026.

Australia has withdrawn its team from the urban cycling World Championships scheduled in Riyadh in November, citing safety concerns. These developments have increased scrutiny of travel, logistics and security arrangements for international athletes and officials.

Safety Remains a Key Consideration

The Asian Cup’s status will depend on developments in the coming weeks and assessments by the relevant sporting authorities. Organisers have maintained that preparations remain on track, but the AFC has left open the possibility of a delay if necessary.

With the tournament scheduled to begin in January, further updates on security conditions and operational readiness are likely to shape the final decision.
